Civil Unions in New Hampshire

It looks like New Hampshire will legalize same-sex civil unions fairly soon.

This would have an interesting effect on the prominence of LGBT issues during the primaries.

Given that New Hampshire is the second primary state, passage of the bill will make it all but impossible for presidential candidates to avoid talking about civil unions fairly early in their campaigns.

Exhibit #1: Dodd asks: What if your child were gay?

  1. "Democratic presidential hopeful Chris Dodd told high school students Wednesday that people debating gay marriage should ask themselves just one question: What would you do if your child were gay? Dodd said anyone who would deny a gay child the right to be happy isn't being honest."

Does Chris Dodd honestly not realize that there are thousands of parents who physically, sexually, and emotionally assault their queer children every year? He is the one not being honest with the reality of anti-queer violence in American families by implying that all parents who have gay children will support same-sex marriage.
